Welcome to “Rick & Brian in the Morning,” your new favorite weekly check-in for real estate insights, team-building tips, and business growth strategies—all powered by the Eagle Nexus ecosystem. Discover how a spontaneous trip to the Canadian Rockies sparked three powerful lessons every real estate agent should know. From unplugging to trusting the process and building financial systems, this post offers real-world takeaways to help you grow your business—and your life—with more intention and clarity.
Sometimes, the best real estate insights don’t come from a conference room—they come from a trail in the Canadian Rockies, or a quiet moment away from the inbox. That’s exactly what happened when Brian, one of our long-time Eagle Nexus leaders, took a last-minute trip to Banff with his wife, Holly. What started as a spontaneous vacation quickly became a source of unexpected clarity on what it means to grow a real estate business—and a life—with purpose.
Here are the three biggest takeaways from his trip, and how they translate into real estate best practices for agents at any stage of their journey.
In real estate, the line between “on the clock” and “off” is razor-thin. But as Brian realized during his trip, true productivity requires intentional rest.
“Leah kept catching me responding to messages on our database during the trip and said, ‘Just stop.’ She was right.”
Whether it’s a weekly day off, a monthly unplug weekend, or a fully disconnected international getaway, building scheduled decompression into your business plan is essential. It's not about escaping your business—it’s about protecting your long-term performance.
Real estate tip: Schedule a “No Showings” day each week and communicate it to your clients. Use it to handle errands, personal growth, or simply rest. Your business (and your brain) will thank you.
On a whim, Brian and Holly ventured off the main tourist track to a place called Abraham Lake. A random trail marker pointed them 3 km toward an unknown destination. With no plan and a little hesitation, they followed it anyway—and ended up discovering the most beautiful, untouched waterfalls of their lives.
“If Holly knew how far it actually was, she might’ve turned back. But sometimes, not knowing the whole path is a blessing.”
In real estate, the journey is just like that hike. You may not see the final destination. You may not have the perfect marketing strategy yet. But if you trust the process—the calls, the follow-ups, the CRM work, the education—you will see the payoff.
Real estate tip: Lean into the systems already built for you (hello, Nexus pathways 👀). Don’t reinvent the wheel—just follow the worn path to your own “waterfall moment.”
The ability to take that trip—and enjoy it without guilt or stress—came down to one thing: financial systems.
“We started living off 50% of our income. The rest went into savings and business reserves. That’s what allowed us to say yes to the trip without hitting the credit cards.”
For solo agents and team leaders alike, profitability isn’t just about commissions—it’s about what you keep. Brian’s advice to new agents: Before you launch your business, set aside $10,000 as a 6-month runway. And once you’re earning, allocate your income intentionally.
Real estate tip: Follow the Eagle Nexus budgeting model:
25% to expenses
50% to personal living
25% to savings and investments (including future trips 🌍)
Maybe it's financial freedom. Maybe it's more time with your family. Maybe it's hitting ICON. Whatever it is, the path is waiting—and it’s already been cleared by those who’ve gone before you.
At Eagle Nexus, our job is to show you that trail. Your job? Take the first step.
